How do you provide water in the workplace?

Updated: 21 Sep 2023

Is it the employer's obligation?

"The employer is obliged to provide the employee with a drinking regime at his/her own expense in case of heat or cold stress (Section 37(2)(f) of Act No 355/2007 Coll.)." In industrial and commercial areas in Slovakia, most buildings do not have access to municipal water supply and rely on local sources. Although the water from these sources may initially be potable, the pumps and pipe networks are usually poorly maintained and monitored, resulting in non-potable water due to microbiological contamination or the presence of heavy metals and other harmful substances. Although this water is suitable for flushing toilets, alternative solutions are needed to meet mandatory drinking requirements. Some companies choose to provide bottled water to their employees in small packages, which can be costly, with prices often exceeding 15 cents per glass. Furthermore, this approach is unsustainable as pet bottles are a major contributor to plastic waste worldwide. The logistical problems associated with the distribution, storage, collection and return of bottles are often not taken into account when considering alternatives. Water dispensers are an excellent source of hydration in the workplace. Many companies have found them to be an ideal alternative for meeting mandatory water requirements. Water dispensers provide a reliable source of high quality drinking water, eliminate logistical problems, and are also the most cost-effective option with a price of approximately 3 cents per glass. Research has shown that the presence of a water dispenser in the workplace also encourages people to drink more water, leading to improved health and increased productivity. Water is a natural source of energy, supplying oxygen to the brain and vital organs while flushing harmful impurities from the body. Drinking more water can also lead to significant savings on more expensive and less healthy beverages such as coffee and soft drinks.
